Helping Kids Eat Healthy with an Art Project

  • I have to admit I bring in’Smarties’ sweettart candy once in awhile, to give incentive.
  • Once a student brought in smoked salmon for lunch, the class went wild.
  • With 5 choices in their lunch bags some kids take just 1 bite and go to the next thing.

As a teacher I like to incorporate into my lesson plans good healthy eating habits that I practice and instill in the children how much we need to learn to take care of the bodies that God gave to us. God gave us these bodies to succor Him recall care of His world that He made. These bodies we beget are His technically so as a teacher I need to help the children understand the value of being healthy.

It would always amaze me at some of the lunches the children would bring in, from left over dinner to pre-packaged things purchased at the grocery store. I’ve seen a lot of healthy food and a lot of things that I know I wouldn’t want for lunch. Some of the things they brought in didn’t even resemble anything anybody would eat. It also amazed me to no raze to see all the sugar and processed foods that contained little or no taste.

A lesson plan/art project that I like to do with my students is to learn red light, green light and yellow light foods. We would start out by going through magazines and cutting out pictures of all the foods we love. Then on a big portion of construction paper I would arrangement 3 titanic circles and let the students color them, one red, one yellow and one green, yeah like a stop light. After these two things were done we would decide together which food items belonged to what color circle, and they would paste them on the appropriate circle. On the top of the page I write Eating Healthy. Of course red light foods would be things that we should try to avoid or eat very miniature of and yellow would be O.K. things that in moderation were O.k. as well, but green light foods were things like vegetables and fruits and things that are good for us. The students caught on quick we had our page filled up fast. We also do a fun week long project that I featured in another article. HERE, and HERE.

Diabetes is a common quandary faced by people today, fast lifestyle and a habit to eat like a flash foods, junk foods, sweets etc land us in the pool of diabetics. Garlic: As garlic is rich in potassium, it helps in replacing potassium which gets lost in urine. Its other components Zinc and Sulpher are used by the body for composing insulin; therefore it helps in lowering down the level of sugar in the blood. It is satisfactory to consume 3-4 flakes of freshly crushed garlic daily.

Onion: Onion is very well-behaved in lowering the blood sugar levels; it is very diuretic and digestive. Dibeticians suggest that consumption of raw onion is very effective.

Flax Seed: This contains high dosage of Omega 3 fatty acids. Flax seeds are very useful in lowering blood sugar levels as it maintains the sensitivity of the cell membrane helps in production of insulin and reduces the formation of glucose in the body.

Fibre: Some current sources of Fibre are whole wheat, Soya, kidney beans, oat meal etc. Fibre helps in containing diabetes and helps in slowing down the production of glucose by slowing down the digestion process. Healthy Lunch Ideas for the Workplace

I work in an elementary school, teaching art to grades K – 8, so I need an easy to eat, yet satisfying lunch to get me through the day. Since I am also watching my weight, I like to choose recipes low in calories and low in fat, but high in energy.

One of my favorite lunches is the tortilla “roll-up.” This can be made the night before (I am definitely NOT a morning person!) and easily effect into your lunch bag in the morning. To make the roll-up, I lay out a burrito-size soft-shell tortilla, layer on a few slices of turkey (the protein is filling and gives you energy), then I like to add green leafy spinach. Starting at one end, roll tightly – then wrap in cellophane wrap and put in the refrigerator overnight. Add some sliced oranges and a water bottle the next morning for a balanced, healthy lunch. I’ll often supplement this with a baggie of lowfat crackers on my desk if I start to feel hungry.

Another mountainous lunch ingredient is the “incredible, edible egg”. Eggs are filling and also fill protein. I like to make hard-boiled eggs on the weekend, pre-peel them and set into separate containers or zip-top bags for ease of use throughout the week. Two eggs, on their own, and a yogurt with granola cereal (not alot – just for crunch) are very satisfying for lunch. Or you can create a terrific salad with lots of colorful veggies and add sliced eggs and lowfat, low-cal dressing.

As far as beverages go, recently, several powdered juice-alternative mixes have come on the market that you can slip into your lunch bag and add to your own water bottle at work. These come in many flavors (even hunger-reducing ones) and obtain a edifying alternative to plain water if you’re not much of a water drinker, like me. Another idea is to brew iced tea at home on the weekend and recall in re-usable drink containers.

Other ideas for lunch or workplace snacks are baked tortilla chips and salsa, very low in fat and satisfy that salty-crunchy craving. This is a better alternative to the workplace popcorn, which if you are not careful, can be very fattening. Pretzels with honey-mustard or spicy-mustard are good too. For me, it’s the dipping that makes it more than objective a bland, cardboard snack. Just settle your dips wisely!

Accurate on Route 71 in Arkansas on the way to Mt Magazine, one can find a truck stop restaurant that will give the taste palette stop. Like other places along the roadways of America, this is a area where everyone knows good eats are likely to come in if they see the many trucks in the parking lot outside. Pass along the Highway in Prescott, Arkansas and sidle up with the truckers for eating that is pure joy.

It has long been said by people who drive around the country that truck stops are the places people should stop at and eat. That’s because truckers, who fade a lot, are likely particular folk because they have to stop and eat in different places. They have learned where to go, and the lineup of trucks in front of a restaurant may be indication that the food inside is good.

Don’t worry about the look inside; often the truck stops are connected with small convenience stores or standalones that are part of that broken-down service and presentation. The menu may be typed on an worn Smith Corona or a computer ten years musty, but it’s readable; and that’s what counts. Usually the menu is wrapped around with plastic with miniature or no special images. Nothing special in the print, just good, former menu reading that tells you about good old-fashioned food.

Truckers sit in minute and large groups, bearded, muscular, and enjoying the ambience of simplicity and down home good talk. Those who enter are apt to hear the vernacular of whatever part of the country the truck stop may be in. So you may see beer, depending on the location of the truck stop, or hear a swear word or two, but not mighty. There is still that simple way fellows like truckers have that says greet ladies with courtesy, hold doors open and peek the kiddies to see that they don’t stumble when they run across the floor. On a recent trip, my husband I found the food at the truck cessation on Route 71 well worth the wait and the understated style and interior architecture. We ordered microscopic salads with Reuben sandwiches on rye with homemade soup, and were satisfied the rest of the day, having eaten at 2:00 pm. The meal was that substantial.

Truck stops have been part of American legend, with almost the same interesting patterns and ideas as the old Burma Shave signs along the road with witty sayings. Those Burma Shave signs may be gone, but truck stops and those good eats linger. This may be one of the most flavored representation of culture combined with eats that represents the United States and should be part of the stop for anyone on the road.

My recommendation is that truck stop we made in Prescott, Texas on 71 for some of the best food in the country.

Healthy Dessert Options for Your 4th of July Spread

When you think of “healthy desserts” usually boring foods near to mind. “Healthy” often times is code for sugar free, burly free, and fun free. I don’t like the stigmas that are attached to healthy options, so I always try to develop recipes and ideas for foods that are not necessarily guilt free, but they won’t leave you feeling like you abandoned your responsible eating habits.

4th of July is a time for revelry and celebration, and it is imperative that your celebratory desserts reflect that. So of course, they must scream red, white, and blue! I am offering 3 simple, brilliant, affordable recipe options for you to share with your friends and family this year.

1. Did you know that angel food cake is fat free? Most packaged angel food products are as simple as “just add water” and bake. Best of all, no one takes a bite out of angel food and thinks: “This is healthy, I don’t want it.” That being the case, when I make cupcakes, I use angel food instead of passe cake mixes. This is a technique that you won’t find on the back of the box, so you should keep that in mind if you thought on using this recipe.

You should follow the directions on the box (assuming you are using a packaged mix). If you want to spice things up, add a few drops of red or blue food coloring to the batter. The color is fantastic since angel food is lustrous white. Instead of using the former tube pan, line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners (paper not aluminum liners to avoid burning the cupcakes). Fill each cup about 3/4 of the way full. They won’t rise too much, but you don’t want them to overflow. Cooking time varies anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes depending on your oven and how high you possess your cups. Unlike the usual cake which cracks and overflows over the sides of the pan, these mini cakes will just turn light golden brown on top. You do NOT want to overcook them or they will be chewy. Once they are light gold on top, they can come out of the oven.

Once they are completely cooled, top them with fat free whipped topping. You can keep it white or add color, depending on whether you colored your cake batter- either scheme, have fun and be creative! You can top with red, white, and blue sprinkles or top with blueberries and sliced strawberries. Your cupcakes are sure to be a hit!

2. Another recipe which is easier and very flexible would be a trifle. You can expend all of the same ingredients as above. You will need a broad glass trifle bowl, an angel food cake, 1 or 2 containers of fat free whipped topping, and several pints of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries (basically, any fruits in the red or blue families).

Bake an angel food cake as directed. Once it has cooled, cut it into large pieces. Fill the bottom of the trifle bowl with cake pieces. Then, cover that layer of cake with a layer of whipped topping. Next, pile on an assortment of berries. Then repeat as many layers as you want. The beauty of this dessert is its versatility. But to avoid a mushy trifle, it should be made the day of your event and refrigerated to keep it firm. You could also mediate making individual parfaits. All instructions are the same, just reduce the portions to fit smaller dishes or cups.

3. The last suggestion I can offer is a classic. Red jello. If you want to stick to the healthy, outrageous calorie trend, use sugar free strawberry or cherry jello. Individual cups are usually more attractive and appetizing than a large bowl or a mold, so keep that in mind for presentation. Top it off with a fat free whipped topping.

I hope these suggestions inspire you to try a healthy approach to 4th of July dessert offerings. All are fat free which means you can have a little more of a treat without feeling like you’ve ditched your diet. And after a meal of burgers, potato salad, coleslaw, and other high fat side items, a dessert on the lighter side will be greatly appreciated, if not by your guests, at least by you!

The Pros and Cons of Colonics

The cleansing of the colon using copious amounts of water was a common procedure in the era 1930-1950s. The first instance was recorded in 1500 B.C., in the Ebers Papyrus, a medical instruction book. In the fourth and fifth centuries B.C., colon hydrotherapy was musty to treat fever, and Galen in the second century A.D. advocated its use.

In recent times, colon hydrotherapy has suffered from a bad reputation, due to the many unskilled and untrained practitioners, but is now enjoying a resurgence. Department of Agriculture reports that the average American eats 150 lbs. of sugar and 566 cans of soft drinks – “liquid candy” equal to “52 teaspoonfuls of added sugars per person per day.” Would you be willing to sit down and eat 52 teaspoons of white sugar – every day? “Why, I’d be sick,” you may reply, and that’s exactly the point.

Junk Food

Americans are now eating more junk foot than they have for decades. “Dietary degeneration” begins with the 45 large bags of potato chips we purchase each year (an increase of 78% over 1981); 120 servings of french fries (up $130%); 120 pastries or desserts (up 95%); 190 candy bars (up 80%); 150 slices of pizza (up 143%). What are the long-term effects of such a diet? Does anyone know?
The New York Post reported on January 22, 2004, the case of Morgan Spurlock, a filmmaker, who decided to net out by eating all his meals at McDonalds.

“Scores of cheeseburgers, hundreds of fries and dozens of chocolate shakes later, the formerly strapping 6-foot-2 Unique Yorker – who started out at a healthy 185 pounds – had packed on 25 pounds. But his supersized shape was the least of his problems. Within a few days of beginning his drive-through diet, Spurlock, 33, was vomiting out the window of his car, and doctors who examined him were shocked at how rapidly Spurlock’s entire body deteriorated.

“It was really crazy – my body basically fell apart over the course of 30 days,’ Spurlock told The Post. His liver became toxic, his cholesterol shot up from a low 165 to 230, his libido flagged and he suffered headaches and depression.”

Toxins

Junk food, including soft drinks, contains spoiled chemicals and additives, and may be infused with excitotoxins, found in monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartame (NutraSweettm), cysteine, hydrolyzed protein and aspartic acid. These substances literally blast and excite neurons to death, resulting in brain damage. Our basic well-being arises from the choices we make day-to-day.

Toxins affect every cell in the body. When they build up in the nervous system, we may feel depressed and annoyed. Are you serving as a home base for parasites? Chances are, you are. According to data gathered by the UN, about 1.5 billion people support roundworms, one billion whipworm, 1.3 billion hookworm, and 265 million schistosomes. The incidence of pinworms is over 200 million worldwide. In America and in Canada pinworms are found in 30-80% of children.

Our colons are vulnerable to 100 + types of parasites, from limited ones only visible under a microscope to tapeworms several feet long. Nor are parasites restricted to the area of the colon; they can also be found in the muscles and joints, the lungs, liver, brain, blood, the esophagus, the skin and in the eyes.

But how do we get them? From water, soil, poorly cooked meat, dirty fruits and vegetables, from pets and other contaminated people. Along with a fiber supplement, you may want to consider employing herbs such as Black Walnut hulls, garlic, pumpkin seed, deceptive unicorn, grapefruit seed extract and prickly ash bark.

Weight Loss

Colonic cleansing has the added help of weight loss. Proponents claim that when our colons are dirty, we become fatigued – our energy level drops – to the point that we can’t rid ourselves of fat even with diet and strenuous spend.

Nutritionist Dr. Patricia Fitzgerald, in her book The Detox Solution, lists these further benefits of a successful detoxification program:

o Prevents illness
o Aids in weight loss
o Better physical appearance
o Emotional well-being
o Increase mental capabilities
o Enhanced digestion
o Eliminates food addictions
o Minimizes the effects of aging
o Promotes spirituality

Risks

According to some experts, there are risks. They say the significance of “regularity” has been inflated over thousands of years, and that the basic concept of autointoxication is simply sinister. “In 1919 and 1922,” reports Stephen Barrett, M.D.,

“…it was clearly demonstrated that symptoms of headache, fatigue, and loss of appetite that accompanied fecal impaction were caused by mechanical distension of the colon rather than by production or absorption of toxins [3,4]. Moreover, direct observation of the colon during surgical procedures or autopsies found no evidence that hardened feces accumulate on the intestinal walls.
“Today we know that of the digestive process takes place in the exiguous intestine, from which nutrients are absorbed into the body. The remaining mixture of food and undigested particles then enters the large intestine, which can be compared to a 40-inch-long hollow tube. Its principal functions are to transport food wastes from the small intestine to the rectum for elimination and to absorb minerals and water. Careful observations have shown that the bowel habits of healthy individuals can vary greatly. Although most people have a movement daily, some have several movements each day, while others can go several days or even longer with no adverse effects.”

According to Dr. Barrett, some naturopaths, chiropractors and food faddists have that “death begins in the colon,” and that up to a staggering 90% of illnesses are caused by improperly functioning colons. They recommend “fasting, cleansing of the intestines, and colonic irrigation.” Fasting, they say “purifies” the body, and “natural laxative products” can clean the intestines.

The process itself is dangerous, according to Dr. Barrett. A rubber tube is passed through the rectum, in some cases, up to 30 inches, and 20 gallons pumped in over a period of time. An ordinary enema uses about a quart of fluid. And remember, a gallon of water weighs seven pounds! That means you’re adding 140 lbs to your body, in a matter of hours! One of these practitioners claims that toxins are behind all disease, and offers a “comprehensive in-depth colon therapy” that costs $985 for in-clinic training or $295 by correspondence. Some alternative practitioners promote plant enzymes, homeopathic cures and other “intestinal cleansers.”
The risk associated with the above remedies lies in the probability of overkill. Why 20 gallons? Prolonged fasting can kill you. Herbs and dietary fiber can be costly. Experts shake their heads over claims that people have shed large accumulations of feces – it is more likely, they say, that this material consists of “casts” formed by the extra fiber. Some laxatives (containing cascara or castor oil) can damage nerve cells in the colon wall, increasing incidents of constipation.
Colonic irrigation is potentially very ghastly. The tube may cause cramps and severe pain. The equipment may not be adequately sterilized between treatments, risking the transfer of germs from one person to another. There is a danger of bowel perforation. You may experience heart failure caused by the excessive fluid absorbed into the blood. The California Health Department has recommended that colonic irrigation “by chiropractors, physical therapists or physicians should cease. (It) can do no good, only harm.”

Colon hydrotherapy is used by Mark Groven, a naturopathic physician in Seattle, Washington. He advocates its use for chronic fatigue, sinus problems, asthma, arthritis, and constipation, but cannot point to any research proving it to be at all sterling. There appears to be none.

It is up to the individual person to decide whether colonics are right for them. Talk it over with your doctor before taking this step.

Managing Diabetes Symptoms Using the Diabetes Food Pyramid

The Diabetes Food Pyramid is a blood glucose management system that divides food items into six groups, with each group varying in size on the pyramid. Food is categorized based on its carbohydrate whine, and portions are adjusted to equal about 15 grams of carbs. Here are the guidelines to managing your diabetes symptoms using the Diabetes Food Pyramid.

Grains and Starches

Eat 6 to 11 servings of grains and starches every day. The base of the diabetes food pyramid contains carbohydrates. Most of this group is made of grains, including oats, rye and wheat. Starchy veggies like corn, peas and potatoes, also belong in this group, as do dry beans such as pinto beans and black-eyed peas.

Veggies

Have 3 to 5 servings of vegetables each day. This group contains veggies that are coarse in starch and high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. You can have 1 cup of raw or one-half cup of cooked spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower or cabbage. Tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce can produce a great side salad to your meal.

Fruit

Eat 2 to 4 fruit servings every day. The next layer of the pyramid includes fruits. Try to fill up on fruits with high levels of antioxidants, such as blueberries, strawberries and blackberries. Melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew or watermelon are other healthy choices. Snack on apples, oranges, grapes, bananas and peaches. A serving size is 1 little fresh fruit, one-half cup of canned fruit or 2 tbsp. of dried fruit.

Dairy

Choose 2 to 3 servings of dairy products each day. Dairy products contain high levels of calcium, protein and vitamins. It is better to determine a low-fat or a non-fat variety to derive the nutrients and taste of dairy products without the calories or the saturated fat. A serving is typically 1 cup, and you can decide from yogurt, milk, cheese or cottage cheese.

Protein

Eat 4 to 6 ounces of protein per day. This group includes eggs, dried beans, tofu, cottage cheese, peanut butter, cheese and fish. You can also have poultry, but should eat very dinky red meat. Choose lean meats and cut off all fat. It is best to eat fatty fish to get the additional health benefits.

Fats and Sweets

Consume very little sweets, fats and alcohol. Candy, cakes, cookies, muffins and donuts all contain a lot of sugar. Fried foods and potato chips have a lot of fat. Keep your serving sizes really small and save them for special treats. Alcohol can raise blood sugar levels, so it is best if you talk to your doctor before consuming any alcoholic beverages. Serving size is typically 1 small muffin or cupcake, 2 small brownies or cookies and one-half cup of low-fat ice cream.

How to Use Your Computer to Lose Weight

Do you want to know how your computer can help you lose weight? This is how it has helped me to keep from gaining weight and possibly has helped me lose weight.

I am a compulsive overeater. I love to eat and cook. I am, even if I say so myself, an excellent cook. I believe that many of our eating habits are ingrained in us since childhood. It takes a monumental difficulty to change those habits. Almost every weight loss program can attend you lose weight. They all have the answers to losing weight.

Diets are situation up to fail. First you don’t call a diet, a diet. It has the word die in it. That is why Weight Watchers called their program the “Live it,” program. It sounds flowery, sweet and positive. I am a life time member or Weight Watchers. The only problem with that is that I have gained all my weight back and more. Why? Because I didn’t continue eating like I was supposed to on the, “Live it,” program. I love to eat. I think Weight Watchers is still probably the best weight loss program out there. Unfortunately since I quit smoking and drinking I have fought my weight. I am still healthier because I don’t smoke or drink but I would love to lose weight.

There is supposed to be a magic number of times that you need to do something to manufacture a modern habit. I think it is 15 times of doing the same thing over again that it will change your bad habits into good ones. For example if you walk everyday for 15 days, walah! You are now addicted to walking every day. I think that that is crap. Pardon my French, it hasn’t worked for me.

This is my secret to not gaining more weight, and possibly even losing weight. Okay, maybe going to the health club and doing grueling, hideous, spend does contribute, but that is beside the point. Not eating all the sugary desserts that I dearly love also may help.

Did you know that muscle weighs more than fat? That must be why I have only lost a couple of pounds. I was sure that I had lost a lot of weight because my clothes are looser. I am sure you are wondering what this has to do with my magical computer diet. I am getting there.

When I watch television or a movie I have to snack. It is just part of my routine. I can con myself for a while and hiss myself I am not going eating anything. The next thing I know I am in the pantry or refrigerator. It is just habit. I know it is wrong but that is the diagram it is.

When I got my computer, and it may be a tiny slow for you to do this now, I made a yell to myself, that I would not eat anything when I was on my computer or the Internet. I can drink as long as it isn’t milkshakes or anything laden with sugar and fat. I can drink coffee, tea and water, but nothing else shall pass my lips! This is my secret to not gaining weight. I am not sure that I am losing but as much time as I spend on the computer it has to be helping. This is my dieting strategy. I guess I will have to stay on the computer between all meals until I go to bed. If you utilize as much time on your computer as I do and make a promise to yourself to not eat while using it, it can only help you lose weight!
